I’ve been selected for DanceNYC’s Disability. Dance. Artistry. Dance and Social Justice Fellowship!

Hi friends – It’s been a bit of time. Lots of things are moving forward! I am very grateful to be a recipient of DanceNYC’s Disability.Dance.Artistry.Dance and Social Justice Fellowship for my efforts to lead/launch Raw Movement! Though seeing my name next to the word disability is jarring to my mind and body (and not the way I personally identify; and note my slight nervousness to go against others’ ways of identifying), my current reality is that I have been recovering from severe acute illness during the pandemic as well as recovering from what others term “chronic illness”. While I don’t use disabled as an identity marker for myself, I certainly am absolutely disabled BY most spaces and environments due to their neurotypicalism, ableism, classism, heterosexism, etc. (e.g., social model of disability).

I am grateful for organizations supporting those of us severely impacted by lifetimes of being in spaces where our needs are not met. To the highly sensitive and highly empathic and neurodivergent and chronically stressed and chronically ill and disabled folks, whatever terms we use or do not use for ourselves, we exist. And we work hard to do so. In receiving this award, I am grateful to receive care. Our care for ourselves does deserve to mirrored back to us by the spaces we inhabit. We do deserve spaces that meet our needs.
